Gebre Worknesh Terefe
Ethiopia 2020
Gebre Worknesh Terefe is a researcher at the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research (EIAR). Her research centers on crop improvement, specifically maize, to increase adaptation to the changing climate and resistance to diseases. Together with her team, they have released seven improved maize varieties from their breeding program. The maize varieties have shorter yield periods to help Ethiopian smallholders overcome the challenges of climate change, such as long periods of drought and shorter rainy seasons.
Terefe hopes to make a significant contribution toward transformative and inclusive agriculture in Ethiopia.
