We are delighted to announce that Omolara Titilayo Aladesanmi, a 2014 African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) Fellow from Nigeria, is among the 50 new grantees who have been selected for the 2018/2019 Schlumberger Foundation Faculty for the Future Fellowship. This is a fellowship program that natures a community of women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) from developing and emerging countries. Aladesanmi will be using the opportunity for her postdoctoral research at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Berkeley, California. Her research focuses on “Bioremediation of Polluted Environment to Ensure Food Security and Environmental Sustainability.
“The success in my application for this grant was greatly influenced by the skills that the AWARD Fellowship equipped me with. The AWARD Fellowship was an eye opener that helped me to harness available research opportunities,” says Aladesanmi, a senior research officer at National Centre for Technology Management, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in Nigeria.
From us at AWARD, it’s a hearty congratulation to Aladesanmi on being selected for the prestigious postdoctoral fellowship. Aladesanmi is devoted to gender mainstreaming in scientific research, capacity building, and education. As a member of the Health Concerns Committee at Organization for Women in Science in Developing World (OWSD), she is actively developing programs for girls in secondary school. She also works on gender policies for her institution, the National Centre for Technology Management (NACETEM). Aladesanmi’s goal is to influence policy development at a higher level, enforcing a fishpond monitoring system and other standards in national and, ultimately, international forums. The monitoring system would provide real-time monitoring of critical parameters that fish health before harvesting and management of fish loss to the minimum rate.
Aladesanmi is one of a growing number of women agricultural scientists who have won an AWARD Fellowship.
