Marias Kaibeh Brooks
Liberia 2013
Marias Kaibeh Brooks developed a passion for agriculture and its potential to improve lives at her grandmother’s side. The two of them lived in Lofa County in northern Liberia, where they engaged in traditional farming, growing rice in rotation with groundnuts and potatoes to maintain the soil, and intercropping vegetables, such as maize, peppers, and okra. “Agriculture was our only means of support, as it is for other smallholder farmers,” says Brooks.
Agriculture is at the center of everything in our country,” she says. “The economy depends on it, the politicians depend on it, and everyone depends on the food it produces.
