Janet Nabwami
Uganda 2011
Janet Nabwami grew up watching her mother raise and harvest mangoes on the family’s small farm in Uganda. “She encouraged me to study agriculture, and I was particularly interested in soil fertility management,” Nabwami recalls. Nabwami graduated with a BSc in agricultural land use and management from Makerere University and went on to do an MSc in soil science at the same institution. She served as a research assistant for two years at the university before responding to a newspaper advertisement placed by UP, which was recruiting academic staff in Rwanda.
It was a good opportunity, so I applied,” says Nabwami, who is now head of UP’s soil and environmental science department. “Being young in a senior role can be difficult, but the challenges make me more assertive and determined to get my work done.
