Dr. Jill Biden Arrives in Kenya to Visit Dadaab Refugee Camp, Highlight the Need for Aid in the Horn of Africa

Dr. Jill Biden, wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, visited the Kenyan Agricultural Research Institute (KARI) on August 8 before traveling to the Ifo refugee camp outside Dadaab, eastern Kenya. More than 12 million people in the Horn of Africa are in need of immediate food aid, including nearly half of Somalia’s population. AWARD Mentor Dr. Lusike Wasilwa, Assistant Director, Horticulture and Industrial Crops, and 2008 AWARD Fellow Miriam J. Otipa, Senior Research Scientist, hosted displays at the event, along with other KARI staff members.

Dr. Biden’s trip will underscore the United States’ commitment to working with the governments and people of the region, and the international community, to assist the people of the Horn of Africa during this urgent time of need, and to investing in long-term solutions to hunger and food insecurity in the region.
